COMMANDANT’S READING PROGRAM

This rigorous elective program centered on current and provocative books and critical reasoning honors the memory of Dr. Sara Morgan, a dedicated and accomplished USAWC faculty member, who died from cancer in March 2011. Dr. Morgan had led the Deputy Commandant’s Reading Program for a number of years to inspire select students to not only read at a higher level, but to explore and share their insights on complex strategic leadership issues with prominent authors and others in the program in a meaningful way. The Commandant now personally leads this program, supported by donations from graduates and fellow faculty members in Dr. Morgan’s memory.

CENTER FOR STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP (CSL)

The Center for Strategic Leadership (CSL)’s areas of emphasis are experiential education, Senior Leader education, support to Army Senior Leader research, and support to both U.S. Army War College and Army Senior Leader strategic communication efforts.  CSL’s professional staff and facility host, support, develop, and conduct world-class events (workshops, symposia, conferences, games, and exercises) focused on a broad range of strategic leadership and national security issues and concepts in support of the USAWC, the Army and the Interagency and Joint Communities.  

Foundation funding primarily supports programs that are generally political-military decision-making exercises or experiential events designed to provide students an opportunity to engage with and learn from strategic leaders and staffs as they integrate and apply knowledge acquired in the USAWC core curriculum.  Funding also support events that bring senior leaders from other organizations and agencies to discuss critical issues, e.g. homeland security, international strategic crises, etc., and provide direction on events that are currently affecting national security.  There is also modest funding support in this program for the Strategic Leader Seminars I and II, Basic Strategic Art Program, Executive Leader Course, Combined and Joint Force Land Component Commander’s Course, and International Strategic Crisis Negotiation Exercises.

 

CARLISLE SCHOLARS PROGRAM (CSP)

CARLISLE SCHOLARS PROGRAM (CSP)

The Carlisle Scholars Program (CSP) integrates the seminar experience of traditional Professional Military Education with the autonomy of a self-directed fellowship. Selected students will form a single seminar to complete approximately 10 weeks of intense course work, and then shift focus to research, writing, and advising senior leaders through a combination of individual, team, and faculty-coordinated work. The essence of the Carlisle Scholars Program is competitive analysis of strategic challenges, and contribution to broad strategic dialogue among national security leaders and stakeholders about problems/opportunities of national security. Coordination for the Carlisle Scholars Program begins in the months prior to arrival.

Lori had acquired over 30 years of retail management experience when she joined the Foundation team in April 2022.  Previously employed by a local private college in their retail store for most of those years, Lori brought with her a vast knowledge of vendors and merchandising.  This experience, combined with a B.S. in Business Management from Penn State University, make Lori well-suited for managing the Foundation Gift Shop and expanding it as we plan for the move to the new academic building on Carlisle Barracks in 2023.

Amy joined the Foundation staff in early 2019.  She graduated from the University of Hartford with a BA in English.  Amy worked in the medical insurance field before becoming a military spouse. While much of her focus has been caring for her four children, her volunteer experience include the Red Cross in both Alabama and Korea and helping at the schools her children attended throughout the years.  While volunteering was great opportunity, Amy is happy to join the Foundation team for her first paying job in 24 years!

Administrative Assistant

Tracy joined the Foundation in 2016 as an Administrative Assistant. She received her B.A. degree from Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont with a Major in English, Interdisciplinary Studies, and a Minor in Russian. She has worked for a variety of organizations and has traveled extensively, bringing many talents to the Foundation. She is married to a retired U.S. Air Force officer and former U.S. Army War College faculty member.
