Established in 1993, on the heels of the Cold War, spurred on by the humanitarian crisis in Somalia and the Balkans, the Peacekeeping Institute (PKI) served as a response to the evolution of conflict, the necessity for “military operations other than war,” and the need for doctrine to help deliver a better peace. Since its inception, PKSOI has grown in both size and outreach.
Enables the Commandant to fill capability gaps with faculty and staff such as Post-Doctoral Fellows with expertise to conduct research and contribute to the teaching mission in a number of different disciplines. Faculty augmentation would also include Visiting Professors for various courses, electives, or other programs and Research Assistants for specific temporary needs. As is the case for all programs that refer to hiring actions, the selection and hiring processes are managed exclusively by the UAAWC in accordance with government procedures.
The USAWC Military Spouse & Family Program focuses on the spouses and families of the current class, as well as spouses and families of USAWC graduates who deployed after graduation. Throughout the year, this program conducts a variety of different trainings and sessions for the military spouse.
Each year, approximately 80 senior international officers are invited to attend the U.S. Army War College. The academic year of study, research, and fellowship expose these officers to areas ranging from military concepts and doctrine to national and theater level strategies. Official funds generally provide for the International Fellows, but family member participation is also critical. Foundation funding makes it possible for family members to attend English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) classes and to accompany their student in the tour of Washington, DC and the U.S. Capitol as part of the Department of Defense Information Program. Additionally, these funds allow them to experience Lancaster County and Hersheypark, visit the Constitution Center, and see other historical and cultural sites around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This program improves the Fellows’ first-hand knowledge of U.S. culture and institutions through study and travel. Included in these funds are family member travel, guide service, tour admissions, and additional costs for lodging.
A gift from the USAWC Class of 1976 supports an annual lecture on facets of American life, role of the media, and principles of democracy. This gift honors former Commandant LTG DeWitt C. Smith, Jr., RES ’66, who was the founder of the International Fellows Program. Also included in this program is an annual lecture on facets of American life, role of the media, and principles of democracy funded by a gift from the USAWC Class of 1976 in honor of former Commandant LTG DeWitt C. Smith, Jr., RES ’66, who was the founder of the International Fellow program. Finally, an anonymous donor to the Foundation provides the International Fellows and their families a Philadelphia harbor cruise during each academic year.
Corporate and defense industry leaders travel to the USAWC to share insights and experiences that enhance the students’ understanding of the defense acquisition and support systems. Three keynote speakers address large industry issues, start-up or small industry issues, and issues from the government perspective. Following those three addresses to the entire student body, the individual representatives from corporate and defense industries join the 24 seminar groups for discussion and dialogue about the roles and processes that make development and acquisition either successful or unsuccessful. Funding supports the reception of guests and selected students in order to maximize the limited time available for this event. The Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) provides invaluable assistance and support to Industry Day.
This rigorous elective program centered on current and provocative books and critical reasoning honors the memory of Dr. Sara Morgan, a dedicated and accomplished USAWC faculty member, who died from cancer in March 2011. Dr. Morgan had led the Deputy Commandant’s Reading Program for a number of years to inspire select students to not only read at a higher level, but to explore and share their insights on complex strategic leadership issues with prominent authors and others in the program in a meaningful way. The Commandant now personally leads this program, supported by donations from graduates and fellow faculty members in Dr. Morgan’s memory.
