LANDPOWER ESSAY (ELIHU ROOT) AWARDS

These annual awards are for the best articles on the strategic role of Landpower published in The U.S. Army War College Quarterly, Parameters, as judged by that publication’s editorial board. 

The Army War College Foundation provides up to $5,000 annually this awards program. The goal is to promote critical and original thinking on the strategic role of Landpower in modern warfare, not only among the students and faculty at Carlisle Barracks, but also throughout the U.S. Army, and the Nation.

Parameters is a refereed journal of ideas and issues, providing a forum for mature thought on the art and science of land warfare, joint and combined matters, national and international security affairs, military strategy, military leadership and management, military history, ethics, and other topics of significant and current interest to the U.S. Army and the Department of Defense. It serves as a vehicle for continuing the education and professional development of graduates of the U.S. Army War College and other senior military officers, as well as members of government and academia concerned with national security affairs.

STAFF AND FACULTY WRITING AWARDS

Colonel John J. Madigan III U.S. Army War College Staff and Faculty Published Writing Awards

An annual program for recognizing and rewarding faculty members for professional publications was established in 1982. When Research Professor and the late editor of Parameters, COL (Ret) John J. Madigan III, passed away in 1999, the program was re-named in 2000 to honor his legacy at the U.S. Army War College. The Foundation supports the program by providing monetary awards to those USAWC faculty and staff whose publications are judged as winners by the Academic Chairholders of the U.S. Army War College.

STUDENT WRITING AWARDS

Each year students are recognized for their excellence in research and writing that contributes to national security. The Foundation’s continued support of scholarship awards confirms the importance the U.S. Army War College places on the essential skill of high quality writing for senior leaders. Papers are judged by faculty Academic Chairholders, the premier educators at the College. The award program includes Resident and Distance Course students and Army War College Fellows. In addition to cash awards from the Foundation, certificates are presented to the awardees by the College.  

COL Don and Mrs. Anne Bussey Military Intelligence Writing Award

This annual award is for the best Resident student paper addressing national security and defense issues from a military intelligence perspective. This award is supported through the generosity of a former faculty member and his wife, the late Colonel (AUS) and Mrs. Don Bussey.

MG Harold J. Greene Memorial Writing Award

MG Harold J. “Harry” Greene, a graduate of the USAWC Class of 2003, was killed in Kabul, Afghanistan on August 5, 2014. This annual award recognizes a U.S. Army War College student or Fellow whose strategy research paper or Fellow’s writing requirement is judged to be excellent by the USAWC Writing Awards committee on a topic of MG Greene’s primary interest areas, to include but not limited to science and technology, research, test, and evaluation, acquisition, integrating command, control, communications, computing, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems, and/or advanced logistics systems.

Colonel Francis J. Kelly Memorial Writing Award

This annual award is for the best Resident student paper addressing an issue related to counterinsurgency, special operations, special warfare, or special forces. It honors the memory of COL Francis J. Kelly, a graduate of the USAWC Class of 1962 and one of the Army’s first Special Forces officers and authors of counterinsurgency doctrine. It is possible through the generosity of COL Kelly’s daughter, Ms. Moira Kelly, NSS ‘12 and her late husband Dan Graves.

Daniel M. Lewin Cyber Terrorism Technology Writing Awards

These writing awards were established to honor Daniel M. Lewin, killed on September 11, 2001 aboard American Airlines Flight 11 which crashed into the World Trade Center. They are presented to one student each from the Resident class and the Distance class for papers that focus on cyber-terrorism, cyber-warfare, technology, and national security. The awards are possible through the generosity of Mr. Marco Greenberg and several other of Danny’s friends and colleagues. 

Dr. Sara L. Morgan Memorial Writing Award

This award was established in Academic Year 2011 in memory of Dr. Sara L. Morgan after her death while serving on the faculty of the College.  Dr. Morgan was a Professor of Human Resources and Personnel Management and she specifically was instrumental in increasing the visibility and the involvement of the outstanding government civilians who make up the U.S. Army War College classes each year. She was an advocate not only for them, but for many programs that increased the human dimension and productivity of programs in the College, including the Commandant’s Reading Program.

COL Jerry D. Cashion Memorial Writing Award

This writing award was established by the friends and colleagues of the late COL Jerry D. Cashion, a graduate of the USAWC Class of 2008 and an active duty faculty member in the Department of Military Strategy, Plans, and Operations, who passed away in November 2012. The award is for a Resident student’s or Fellow’s paper judged to be outstanding on any topic of national security of strategic landpower. 

LTG Eugene J. D’Ambrosio Logistics Writing Award

This writing award was established to honor the memory of the late LTG Eugene J. D’Ambrosio, a graduate of the USAWC Class of 1968, who passed away in January 2004. The award is for a Resident student’s or Fellow’s paper judged to be outstanding on a strategic logistics topic. The award is possible through the generosity of LTG (Ret) Dennis L. Benchoff, USAWC Class of 1983 and former Foundation Trustee. LTG Benchoff was always grateful for the mentorship and leadership of LTG D’Ambrosio.

CSM William and Mrs. Rosa Barrineau Writing Award

This writing award is provided in conjunction with the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) for the best Resident student paper on a topic related to communications and electronic, information warfare, signal technology, and cyber security and futures. The cash award is made possible by the generosity of COL (Ret) James E. Barrineau, a graduate of the USAWC Class of 2004 in honor of his parents, CSM William and Rosa Barrineau. 

AWC Foundation Awards for Outstanding Research Papers

Four additional writing awards are provided for Resident and Distance students for papers judged superior on any approved topic by the College.   Army War College Fellows are considered for these awards with the Resident Course.
