I am the Executive Officer of the 332 Medical Brigade in Nashville, Tennessee (U.S. Army Reserve) and our mission is to build and fill 85-Soldier Medical Task Force rosters, from a variety of medical job specialties, to establish and staff the Federal Medical Stations. These medical stations are being created to receive non-COVID-19 patients from the urban medical centers that are currently at capacity in an effort to decompress and improve their ability to receive and care for critical care patients.

I am currently serving as Chief of Operations at the National Joint Intelligence & Operations Center, National Military Command Center, in the Pentagon. Our team works daily with the COVID-19 Crisis Management Team updating the Director of the Joint Staff and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs (CJCS) on all DoD COVID activities. Part of what I do is tracking all the DoD operations in support of COVID-19 across the Joint Force in coordination with the DoD COVID-19 Crisis Management Team (CMT). I’m the link for the CMT between the Combatant Commands for Requests for Information (RFI), taskers, and other coordinating items. In addition to COVID-19, my team still maintains visibility on global operations, movement of forces, and provides situational awareness to the CJCS and the Secretary of Defense.

I’ve been engaged as Brigade Commander of ARMEDCOM’s Northeast Medical Area Readiness Command as we  provide medical manpower deploying directly to support 3rd Medical Command’s efforts, as well as forming our own Urban Augmentation Medical Task Forces for deployment, maintain our own readiness and support our Soldiers who’ve been infected– usually while serving in their civilian jobs.  Finally, I’ve been assisting Defense Health Agency as the FUOPS to assist in their response to the crisis. My USAWC brother, Dr. Omar Bholat (also DDE ’20), is currently fighting the disease as a civilian.  In addition to tirelessly caring for his own patients, he’s also been fighting for resources like durable equipment and PPE for his hospital as they seek to expand to meet patient need.

As an Assistant Chief for the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM), I am responsible for the delivery of the state’s emergency management programs within the 35 counties that comprise the Southeast Texas Region – a land area slightly larger than the state of Maine. In my capacity, I support local city and county governmental jurisdictions in the execution of their emergency management programs. I routinely liaise with locally elected officials and their appointed emergency management coordinators in all phases of emergency management (preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation). During this disaster, I’ve been working with local, state and federal partners in the ordering for and delivery of personal protective equipment (PPE), planning for and setting up alternate care facilities in the event our primary care facilities become overwhelmed, establishing community based testing sites, and setting conditions for the long-term recovery from this pandemic. I continue to assist U.S. Congressional Representatives as they conduct various town hall meetings with their constituents to better inform them of the ongoing response. Additionally, as we know the financial repercussions from this disaster will be far reaching and will impact all facets of local institutions, I am also responsible for assisting local governments and other eligible entities navigate the various federal reimbursement funding streams.
