COL Bobby Ginn is Post Commander of Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and a key member of the Mississippi National Guard in the State’s COVID-19 response. Camp Shelby is the largest National Guard Training Center in the nation, which also serves as First Army’s Mobilization Force Generation Training Center for Active DoD service components and National Guard. Camp Shelby is a key location for many contingencies, having been determined by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mississippi Valley Division to have rooms that could be used for housing COVID-19 patients. This planning and preparation was done in coordination with the Mississippi Governor’s COVID-19 State Task Force contingency plan to support patient overflow in hospitals across South Mississippi. Bobby’s workload was also increased when Camp Shelby facilities suffered substantial damage during severe storms. Approximately 70 buildings have minor damage and two buildings have major damage after the storm tore through the Hattiesburg area on April 19, 2020.
