Greg Michel serves as Executive Director of one of the most critical State positions in times of crisis, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). He was appointed by Governor Tate Reeves on December 20, 2019 and since taking over, he’s led the State’s coordinating agency through Presidential Disaster Declarations and some of the most devastating tornados and flooding in years, at the same time the pandemic has appeared. Prior to joining the team at MEMA, Michel served for nearly 30 years in the Mississippi National Guard, culminating as Installation Commander for Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, the largest National Guard Training Center in the nation. Greg and his MEMA teams are on the frontlines of the COVID-19 crisis, along with the Mississippi Department of Health and other State organizations, managing comprehensive approaches in mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. Greg is a key member of the Mississippi Governor’s COVID-19 State Task Force and he works in coordination with other Federal, State, National Guard, and local leaders across every jurisdiction to protect lives during COVID-19 and all the other emergency management challenges facing Mississippi and the region.
