Student Writing Awards

As many as twelve monetary awards for both the Resident Class and Distance Education Class are available to those who reach a high level of excellence. Papers are judged by the faculty Academic Chair Holders, the premier educators at the College.

COL John J. Madigan III Faculty and Staff Published Writing Competition

The College presents as many as six awards for writing excellence for outstanding published articles written by members of the faculty. The College also gives an award for authorship of a book when one meets the stringent criteria for such recognition. These awards are judged by the Academic Chair Holders of the College. COL John Madigan was the editor of Paramaters from 1993-1999.

Landpower Essay Contest

The goal of the USAWC Strategic Landpower Essay Contest is to stimulate critical and original thinking on the strategic role of landpower in modern warfare not only between the students and faculty at Carlisle Barracks, but also throughout the U.S. Army and the Nation. Topics must be related to "the advancement of professional landpower in joint and multinational operations". Through funding made available by the AWC Foundation, the USAWC has established the Strategic Landpower Essay Contest. Selection is made by the Commandant based on the recommendation of the Dean of Academic Affairs. Authors may, but need not, have an affiliation with the USAWC. They may be citizens of any country and may be military or civilian.

Executive Public Speaking Award

The AWC Foundation recognizes excellence in oral presentation by presenting the Executive Public Speaking Award to the winner of the annual speech competition. All students participating in the Executive Public Speaking elective are eligible to compete for the speaking award. The awards program enables the College to recognize outstanding contributions by USAWC students and Senior Service College Fellows.

COL Don and Anne Bussey Military Intelligence Writing Award

The Colonel Don and Mrs. Anne Bussey Military Intelligence Writing Award is presented to the student writing the most distinguished essay on the employment of military intelligence in support of national military strategy. This annual award on this important subject is underwritten through the generosity of a former faculty member and his wife, the late Colonel (AUS) and Mrs. Don Bussey.
