Student Writing Awards

Each year students are recognized for their excellence in research, writing, and public speaking. The Foundation's continued support of these awards confirms the importance the Army War College places on the essential skill of high quality writing and speaking for senior leaders. Papers are judged by the faculty Academic Chair Holders, the premier educators at the College. The awards are for Resident student Strategy Research Papers (SRP) addressing national security and defense issues; Distance education student research papers addressing national security and defense issues; Resident student personal experience monographs addressing a personal role in support of combat or peace operations; and the AWC Foundation Strategic Leadership Writing Award honoring the best Resident student paper addressing characteristics of strategic leaders or issues of strategic leadership. In addition to a cash award, engraved award plaques and framed certificates are presented to the awardees.

COL Don and Mrs. Anne Bussey Military Intelligence Writing Award

This annual award is for the best Resident student paper addressing national security and defense issues from a military intelligence perspective. This award is underwritten through the generosity of a former faculty member and his wife, the late Colonel (AUS) and Mrs. Don Bussey.

Executive Public Speaking Award

The AWC Foundation recognizes excellence in oral presentation by presenting this award to the winner of the annual speech competition. All students participating in the Executive Public Speaking elective are eligible to compete for the speaking award.

MG Harold J. Greene Memorial Writing Award

MG Harold J. Greene was a graduate of the USAWC Class of 2003 who was killed in Kabul, Afghanistan on August 5, 2014. This annual award recognizes an Army War College student or Fellow whose strategy research paper or Fellow’s writing requirement is judged to be excellent by the USAWC Writing Awards committee, on a topic of MG Greene’s primary interest areas, to include but not limited to science and technology, research, test, and evaluation, acquisition, integrating command, control, communications, computing, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems, and/or advanced logistics systems. Colonel Francis J. Kelly Counterinsurgency Writing Award

This annual award is for the best Resident student paper addressing counterinsurgency and is underwritten through the generosity of Moira Kelly and her husband Dan Groves in memory of Moira’s father, USAWC Class of 1962.

Daniel M. Lewin Cyber Terrorism Technology Writing Awards

These writing awards were established to honor Daniel M. Lewin, killed on September 11, 2001 aboard flight 11 which crashed into the World Trade Center, and are presented to one student each from the Resident class and the Distance class.

Dr. Sara L. Morgan Civilian Award

This award was established in Academic Year 2011 in memory of Dr. Sara L. Morgan who headed the Commandant's Reading Program for many years.

Teaching Strategy Group Writing Award

This award is made possible by a donation from a local graduate of the College's National Security Seminar. The award recognizes excellent writing focused on producing and implementing strategy for practitioners subject to real world constraints, to include current and future strategy.

These awards enable the U.S. Army War College to recognize outstanding contributions by USAWC students and Senior Service College Fellows.
